Mediterranean aquaculture takes a step forward with the integration of innovative technologies. The PREFISHFARMproject will transform theIRFAP LIMIA production unit complex, located in Puerto de Andratx (Mallorca), into a cutting-edge marine experimental farm.
An initiative resulting from the collaboration between Aquicultura Balear, SAU (Cooke España), FEEDING SYSTEMS, and two research institutions: IRFAP LIMIA and IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB).
A project selected among the best
PREFISHFARM has been selected in the Public-Private Collaboration Projects call under the 2021-2023 State Plan for Scientific, Technical, and Innovation Research, co-financed by the European Union.
In this call, which has a total budget of 320 million euros, more than 450 proposals were submitted, of which 212 were selected. The project has received funding of 830,951 euros.
Inteligencia Artificial para una Acuicultura sostenible
The objective of PREFISHFARM is the implementation of a precision aquaculture model that utilizes Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimize the management of marine farms, making them more efficient and sustainable. This project will focus on the farming of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), applying advanced technology to enhance production and promote fish welfare.
An Intelligent Feeding Model
PREFISHFARM will implement an AI system in four key stages for decision-making in fish feeding:
- Monitoring: Smart sensors will continuously observe fish behavior and aquatic environmental conditions.
- Prediction: Variables such as fish growth, weight, and nutritional requirements will be estimated.
- Decision: Based on the collected data, the optimal daily feed ration will be calculated, prioritizing fish welfare and environmental impact.
- Action: The feed will be automatically distributed through smart feeders.
Impact and Benefits of the Project
This system will allow for a comparison of the effectiveness of this technology with traditional methods, adjusting feeding strategies based on the collected data. Its implementation will enhance efficiency in aquaculture productionwhile also contributing to environmental sustainability, ensuring responsible production aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
